Bridges Q&A

What are bridges?

Bridges are tooth replacements that can be an alternative to dental implants or dentures. A bridge contains a replacement tooth as well as two crowns. Bridges are made of ceramic or porcelain that your Nobel Dental specialist matches to your surrounding teeth.

A bridge is a very stable way to restore a tooth and many patients find it the easiest and fastest way to do so. Bridges don’t require removal like partial dentures, and they don’t require oral surgery like dental implants.

What is the dental bridge process?

The team at Nobel Dental begins by taking digital impressions with the 3Shape TRIOS® intraoral scanner, a painless process that takes seconds. They import the images to a digital design system to create the perfect bridge for your mouth.

Your dentist removes a very small amount of enamel from the teeth on both sides of the gap. Then they attach temporary restorations with dental cement. You’ll receive oral sedation to ensure that you’re comfortable during this process.

Nobel Dental generally recommends that patients take a day or two off work after their bridge preparation. You may have some tooth sensitivity for a few days during this time, which is usually easily managed with oral medication.

It takes around two weeks to get your new permanent bridge. You’ll come back to Nobel Dental so your dentist can remove the temporary bridge and permanently affix the new one.

Do bridges look natural?

Yes, bridges look very natural because Nobel Dental customizes the fit and color for you. If you're getting a bridge mainly (or at least partly) for cosmetic reasons, the Nobel Dental team generally recommends starting with teeth whitening.

One of the benefits of crowns and bridges is that they're highly stain-resistant. But that also means you can't bleach them. Because of this, it's best to have your natural teeth at the desired shade before adding crowns.

The Nobel Dental team can then match the bridge to your beautifully white teeth. In the future, if your teeth grow darker than the bridge, you'll know it's time for a teeth whitening touch up.
